Restaurant of the Week: Sobas

Inspired by traditional Japanese, Cantonese, and Vietnamese dishes, Sobas serves fresh and trendy interpretations of popular Asian dishes: bowls, bao, and boba. Dine in and enjoy the clean and modern atmosphere, or take it home for quality Asian fusion take-out.

The starters shine at Sobas. Tender glazed Chicken Skewers melt in your mouth and escape right off the plate (especially with my kids around). Hot summer days beg for a cool and light dish, so order the Fresh Spring Rolls with vegetables, crispy bean sprouts, mango-avocado salsa, drizzled with a lime creme sauce; they are gluten-free and optionally vegetarian. On the recommendation of our server, we ordered the Brussels Sprouts. Spoiler alert: they are spectacular. Caramelized to perfection. Go ahead and eat the entire side guilt free!

We enjoyed an order (okay, 2 orders!) of the bao mi, a clever mashup of the Vietnamese bahn mi sandwich, Cantonese bao steamed bun, and your favorite street taco. The soft bread folds over a mixture of crispy pork belly, shaved carrots, pickled red onions, and a fresh jalapeño-cilantro puree. We also ordered the Yakisoba Stir-fry bowl with bright vegetables, soft noddles with a clean teriyaki ginger sauce. Feeling like more noodles? Sobas also offers Pad Thai, Ramen, and Pho with optional chicken, pork belly, rib-eye, shrimp or tofu.

Sobas serves a variety of iced teas with boba, lemonade or soda to accompany your meal. I recommend adding boba to your huckleberry lemonade. Enjoy sipping with the occasional tapioca balls making their way up the straw, like a sweet, inverted, huckleberry marble run.

Grab your food to-go or sit with friends in the cozy booth under the chandelier. If you have small children in your party, Sobas offers easily mounted birchwood high chairs; the streamlined design of the highchair will have you ordering one of those to-go!
