Restaurant of the Week: Tom’s Tavern

Tom’s Tavern, located in downtown Phoenix since 1929 in a historic building that was once a bank, is now serving dinner in a sophisticated atmosphere. The restaurant continues to be a hotspot for lunch, and is now a great place in the evening before a concert or sports game when downtown.

We were given the opportunity to sample some items from their new menu and we started with Buttermilk Fried Oyster served with celery root puree and bacon jam. The crispy oyster paired with the celery root and bacon jam was a treat for the palate, and cued us into the wonderful dishes to come.

The next sampling was the Bibb Lettuce Salad served with Danish Bleu cheese, candied pecans and dried cranberries. The salad was full of flavor between the tartness and creaminess of the bleu cheese, the sweetness of the cranberries and the crunch of the pecans. It was also very refreshing and light, and was a great precursor to the next dish. Most produce on the menu is sourced locally from McClendon Farms when possible.

For the next dish, we had the Slow Cooked Pork Belly served with white cheddar polenta and cherry gastrique. The pork was juicy and full of flavor. It paired well with the flavor combinations of the cheddar polenta and cherry gastrique.

For the main entrée we tried the Petite Steak Frittes with caramelized onion gravy. The steak was cooked to perfection and paired splendidly with the caramelized onion gravy. A good steak with gravy is always destined to be a crowd favorite.

After consuming a wonderful meal and having little space left to pair, we managed to find room for the Seckel Pear Crostata, with cardamom caramel sauce and vanilla gelato. A perfectly light dessert, with a flaky crust, and tender pears, that still satisfied our sweet tooth, and didn’t leave us feeling too stuffed.
