Tracey’s mission is simple, to protect our natural resources, planet, and our most precious resource: humankind. She is sharing her knowledge with us in this weekly column and this week Tracey shares with us the ingredients you should avoid in your beauty products.

Walking through the grocery store, we have become more aware of certain ingredients we need to stay away from. But do you have those same thoughts walking through your local Sephora, Ulta or even Walgreens?

When it comes to what you put on your skin, you need to be just as informed as you are about the food you put in your body. Why? Because what you put on it, goes in it. Yes, your epidermis is the largest organ of your body. Chemicals from all the products you use are absorbed into your epidermis. They can wreck havoc on your endocrine system and your immune systems. Did you know that the average female uses up to 24 personal products everyday? Think about it:

FACE – cleanser, toner, moisturizer, eye cream, primer, foundation, concealer, powder, lipstick or lip balm, eyeshadow, mascara and maybe some brow pencil.

HAIR – shampoo, conditioner, finishing rinse, styling gel and hair spray.

BODY – soap or cleanser, shaving cream, possibly a scrub, body lotion, deodorant or even a spray tan. Maybe even some perfume or body spray for good measure

NAILS – base coat, nail color and top coat. Or maybe you decide to have acrylic or hard gel nails. Nail polish remover as well.

SMILE – toothpaste, mouthwash, floss and teeth whitening products.

WHEW!!!! This is EVERYDAY. DAY AFTER DAY. These toxic ingredients can build up in the body over time because they can not be metabolized by the liver. It is a toxic load that the body is unable to bear. Some of the ingredients can be endocrine disruptors linked to cancer and auto immune disorders.

The BAD bunch

  • Phthalates (plastic)
  • Parabens
  • Sulfates
  • Fragrance
  • Dioxane
  • BPA – Bisphenol – A (in a lot of packaging)
  • Formaldehyde
  • Lead – (hides in lipsticks)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Triclosan
  • Aluminum (in most conventional brands of deodorant)

Sustainably Yours,
Tracey xo
