Fabulous People: Joel Sanders

Joel Sanders, born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, is a personal trainer and “Director of Adult Training” at EXOS, a state-of-the-art facility for athletic training and recovery in Phoenix, Arizona. Learn a little more about Joel:

First job: Pouring concrete. In the summer. In South Georgia. When I was 12. Oh, the perks of being the oldest son in a family that owned a construction business! I worked this job every summer until I went to college. Talk about instilling ā€œhard workā€ and ā€œcharacterā€ at an early age. It taught me a valuable lesson though ā€“ it taught me that I sure as hell better pursue my passions!

Favorite Arizona restaurant: Gadzooks off of Indian School and 7th St. You didnā€™t think I would go with a clean eatinā€™ restaurant did you?! This is my favorite comfort food spot. They have mastered the oven-fired enchilada. I also get a little hint of the South with cornbread on the side.

Person who has impacted your life the most: My coaching mentor, Korey Goodwin. He took me under his wing during my internship with EXOS as a baby-faced 22 year old. He showed me how to bring Vitamin C & E ā€“ charisma and enthusiasm ā€“ every day. He also got me a job with EXOS, which made me the youngest employee in our company at that time.

Your biggest accomplishment in your eyes: Marrying the right girl. I think 90% of our happiness is dependent on who we marry. She is a classic gal. Not sure how I nabbed her.

The biggest obstacle you have overcome: Remember my summer job? Well it almost killed me… literally. When I was 12 I had a hulking, metal wall fall on me on a construction site and it nearly slit my throat. At the hospital, they peeled back the skin on my neck and could see my jugular pumping. Iā€™m lucky to be alive.

Someone who inspires you: Anyone that strives to master their craft. Examples: Watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi on Netflix about a Japanese sushi master that is always searching for the perfect plate of sushi. Another: I went to a Justin Timberlake concert recently. I wasnā€™t a raving JT fan by any means, but after watching him play instruments, dance, sing, and basically own 20,000 people in the palm of his hand, I couldnā€™t help but be inspired by his greatness.

Favorite quote: ā€œMovement is Medicineā€

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Success is 85% people knowledge and 15% product knowledge. Many trainers spend too much time on exercise physiology when they need to invest in being a people person. At EXOS, we hire on personality because we know we can enhance your coaching skills and knowledge. Start by reading “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.

What makes someone fabulous: Anyone that aims to squeeze the juice out of life!
