Each week we will be highlighting one of the fabulous emerging designers from Phoenix Fashion Week 2016. This week, meet Monica Mauro, fashion designer of Monica Mauro Designs, a jewelry line with a natural sparkle, accentuating stylish women.
Hometown: Juarez, Mexico
First fashion job: I started the hard way, opening my own business. At the beginning of my career, I was creating glass fused jewelry and selling it at art galleries.
When did you know you had a passion for fashion: Since I was a little girl I was attracted to play with different outfits and accessories! I used to change my outfit like 5 times a day and always finding different hats, necklaces or shoes to model for my family. But it wasn’t until 3 years ago that I decided to pursue that passion and make it a reality.
Person who has impacted your life the most: My mother, because she always pushed me forward since I was in school. She encouraged me to learn English and supported me throughout every stage of my education. She has supported me in everything I have ever tried to accomplish. She was also the first person that pushed me to go and offer my jewelry at a boutique when I was scared of the impending rejection. She gave me the courage to believe in myself and my dream and begin selling my designs!
I also have to give equal credit to my husband, because he always supported me to follow my dream of starting my own business and stood by me when I quit my stable job to follow this dream. He also redirects me towards my goal and helps me focus whenever I have felt like giving up. Without his support and encouragement I don’t see how I ever could have started on this journey or gotten this far.
Your biggest fashion accomplishment in your eyes: To be able to display and sell my jewelry line in 5 star resorts because this validates all of my hard work. I also love to see the excitement of my clients when they buy one of my pieces.
The biggest obstacle you have overcome: Getting my business off the ground, breaking into the fashion industry and launching my jewelry line.
A Designer who inspires you: Kendra Scott, because with a dream in her head and a few bucks, she built a tremendously successful company. She proved that everything is possible if you believe in yourself.

Advice to someone pursuing a career in fashion as a designer: You need to keep following your dreams and your own ideas. Even if someone tells you that a certain design is not the current trend don’t let anybody change your style because that is the beauty of designing your own line, your uniqueness. You need to work very hard and never give up!
Favorite piece you have ever designed: This two-tone Druzy Bead Necklace features a huge two-tone Agate Slice that really makes a statement! A true one of a kind.
