Each week we will be highlighting one of the fabulous emerging designers from Phoenix Fashion Week 2017. This week, meet fashion designer Gabriela Rosales, the Owner and Designer of Moon Arrow, a psychedelic journey around the world.
Hometown: I was born in Toronto, Canada but I grew up in Bethesda, Maryland
First fashion job: The first retail job I ever had was at Vans and I got hired as a seasonal employee during the holiday season when I was in high school. It was my first glimpse into a fashion and lifestyle brand and business!
When did you know you had a passion for fashion: As long as I can remember I’ve been drawings figures of women wearing eccentric clothing. I’ve also always altered pieces of clothing and even shoes.
Person who has impacted your life the most: My mother. She has taught me by example, what it means to work hard, be selfless and remain grateful, always.
Your biggest fashion accomplishment in your eyes: I would have to say that being selected for Phoenix Fashion Week’s Emerging Designer Bootcamp program is probably my biggest accomplishment up to this point!
The biggest obstacle you have overcome: Deciding to live life on MY terms. That started when I chose to drop out of college in 2014 against the will of my entire family. It was the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make but it was also the right decision and I get validation for that every single day.
A designer who inspires you: Alexander McQueen is, in my opinion, the most innovative designer ever. The fusion of nature, male, female, beauty and ugliness is so fluid and every piece can be interpreted so many different ways- a true Surrealist. A close second would be Guo Pei, who I believe is following in that same surrealist kind of direction.
Favorite quote: “Never give up, always let go.”
Advice to someone pursuing a career in fashion as a designer: Don’t change your style to accommodate others! The right people with the right style for your brand will find you!
Favorite piece you have ever designed: I love the versatility of my Mandala Scarves. They are made from Indian tapestries so the colors are bold and it can dress up any outfit. I offer them in 4 different color options, this one is “Sunset.”
