Each week we will be highlighting one of the fabulous emerging designers from Phoenix Fashion Week 2017. This week, meet fashion designer Loren Aragon, the Owner and Designer of Aconav, defined as cultural designs embodied in timeless elegance.
Hometown: Acoma Pueblo, NM
When did you know you had a passion for fashion: When I saw how my designs were first seen. To see how it inspired others and the way it made people feel. I wanted to connect with people on a level of all the best ideas about life… I felt my fashions spoke to people in that way, I wanted to stay connected.
Person who has impacted your life the most: My grandfather, he was my connection to the past and to the traditions of my people. He always had the best advice for living well, he gave respect and was respected. He was a simple man, but had big dreams and expectations for me.
Your biggest fashion accomplishment in your eyes: Making the lineup for Phoenix Fashion Week. There’s a prestigious quality to the organization as a whole. To be recognized by PHXFW to be among top designers from all around the world, to showcase among the best in the world, and to have their belief in me as a designer & entrepreneur. This is my chance to show and express myself through fashion, but more importantly its my chance to represent Native Fashion on a grand stage!
The biggest obstacle you have overcome: Not believing in myself.
A Designer who inspires you: Virgil Ortiz, Native fashion designer from the Cochiti Pueblo, NM. Inspiring to see the progression and accomplishments of someone who comes from a small community such as mine. Always pushing the limits and exploring new avenues. Always original and truly connected to his own culture.
Favorite quote: “Try Not, Do or Do Not, There is No Try…” -Yoda
Advice to someone pursuing a career in fashion as a designer: Stay persistent, believe in yourself and stay true to your vision. Never fall to negativity, always learn from failures & mistakes.
