Skin-Boosting Foods for Glowing Skin

Lack of moisture can make skin appear dull, dehydrated and more aged, which is not what we want for our appearance! So we turned to one of our favorite local aestheticians, Kimberly, the owner of Skinapeel, for some tips on how to get glowing skin in the desert.

Fortunately, there are several ways to keep the skin hydrated, plump and radiant… topically and in what we eat! The following foods are Kimberly’s favorite picks for boosting hydration, collagen and giving skin that youthful glow!

Pumpkin – Known as nature’s natural collagen, pumpkin is full of remarkable properties for keeping skin young. It’s full of Vitamin E, Vitamin A, zinc, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and antioxidants, and the combination helps skin fight aging from the environment, retains moisture to the skin and helps to keep skin firm and glowing.

Squash – Loaded with beta-carotene that converts to vitamin A within the body, squash helps skin to maintain proper health and integrity, as well as prevent the signs of aging and damage. It is also high in Vitamin C, which not only helps prevent lines and wrinkles, it also helps to brighten and protect against sun spots known as hyperpigmentation.

Pomegranate – These little seeds are extremely high in antioxidants and vitamins. They help to increase blood circulation and therefor encourage a collagen boost in your skin.

Avocado – These creamy and delicious fruits are more than just great in guacamole! They are an amazing source of carotenoids such as beta carotene, beta cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin and lutein which help to improve skin’s density, tone and overall appearance. Also high in Vitamins E, C and Omega 9, avocados do wonders for your skin in keeping it smooth, hydrated, glowing and looking youthful!

Dark leafy greens (my favorite is Kale) – Swiss chard, kale, broccoli, etc. are all full of B vitamins and vitamin A that help increase cell turnover and energy. They also provide the body with a pro-collagen ingredient called lutein. This is crucial for collagen and elastin repair and to prevent further breakdown. They also help to increase hydration and prevent dry, flaky patches that age skin.

Yogurt – This versatile food contains proteins and amino acids such as lysine, which promotes natural collagen production by replenishing damaged collagen and boosting your skin with more!

Citrus Fruits – Brighten, tighten and lighten with citrus’s high content of Vitamin C! This antioxidant regulates the body’s production of collagen and helps your skin to increase in firmness and that radiant glow!

Garlic – It might be small, but these little cloves of flavor also contain a high amount of sulfur, taurine and lipoic acid. All of which are vital in collagen repair. Load up and give your food a boost of flavor and your skin a boost in firmness!

Cranberries – These tart berries prevent premature aging and even has antiseptic antioxidant properties to prevent acne. They contain important collagen-boosting and oxygenating vitamins such as Vitamin C, that helps to strengthen the capillaries and promote blood flow to keep skin smooth and strong.

Figs – Figs are loaded with nutrients such as Vitamin B, potassium, calcium and magnesium. All of these components, as well as the high omega 3 fatty acids keep skin hydrated and conditioned to tone and firm!

Now you can enjoy these foods even more!
