What to Wear to the Phoenix Open 2016

Click here for What to Wear to the Phoenix Open 2022.

If you’ve been to the Waste Management Open (or even if you haven’t), it’s as much about the scene as it is about the golf. It’s a place to see and be seen, and it’s truly a party on grass for locals and golf lovers from around the country. Since we battle with having real “seasons” here in Arizona, it’s hard to know what we’re going to get this time of year, so it’s about layers, comfort and dressing for a good photo op or selfie of course. Fabulous stylist Risa Kotis of RISTYLE Consulting gave us a few looks that will take you through the tournament with ease and style.

Look 1 – Dress it up, but play it down

I love the idea of wearing something fitted and flattering, but adding an element to give you even more shape and an option to layer up for the evening’s festivities as well. Since there’s so much going on off the course, it’s nice to know you’ll be prepared for whatever comes your way. Choose a cute cotton stretch bodycon and wrap a flannel around your waist with layered jewelry and good sunnies for the perfect look. Make sure you stick to tennis shoes like all white Adidas Stan Smith’s or a neutral pair of Converse to tie it all in.

Look 2 – Bomber jacket and jeans

Since it’s still a little chilly, a chic jacket can go a long way. Pair a neutral bomber jacket with a basic or graphic tee, great skinny or destructed fitted jeans and flat booties. I love this look as it’s still appropriate for the season, but gives you the option of layering. Pair with a crossbody bag, delicate gold jewelry and mirrored sunnies (like Ray Bans) to complete the look. A chunky heeled or flat bootie, or even a moto boot all work with this outfit.

Look 3 – Off the shoulder

Showing a little shoulder is very in this year and there’s so much you can do with it. I love the idea of working in an infinity scarf and either choosing an off-the-shoulder top with cutoffs or denim, or even trying a dress with a bootie. Shorts have proven to be a year-round separate for Phoenicians, so if the sun is shining, this is a great way to show a little leg but still be covered on top. Make sure you have your sunnies (let’s face it, sunglasses are a permanent fixture in our sunny state), a great top handle or crossbody bag, and the perfect flat moto boots or flat ankle boots.

Look 4 – On the fringe

Fringe is always in, and it’s even better when it’s used as a fun layering piece for this annual event. Love the idea of an oversized open cardigan with a cute romper in Pantone’s color of the year — delicate blush with a safe neutral is adorable and always works to go from day to night. If the weather isn’t on your side, you can opt for a tall sock with a tall boot so just a sliver of skin is showing, or simply keep this look the way its shown here. A cute top knot, the perfect sunglasses and you’re so ready to yell “Fore” from the 16th hole.

Play with prep
Since we are at a golf tournament, it’s definitely appropriate to throw in a couple preppy elements to a men’s look. Luckily, this particular event doesn’t call for formal course attire, so it’s absolutely acceptable to wear a tee and shorts. I like the idea of a fedora to keep the sun away, and some no-show socks with your favorite worn in boat shoes is a way to be comfy but still blend in with the crowd. If you want an extra layer, throw a white button down over this look and wear it open with loosely rolled sleeves.

Get Literal
Everyone knows this tournament is as much about what happens off the green as it is about what’s on. Having a little fun with your look whether it’s wearing a fun graphic tee from The Chive (www.thechive.com) or channeling your favorite old time golfer (Payne Stewart for instance) as Will Ferrell is doing here — this is definitely a time to have some fun. Anything goes at The Waste Management Open, so play with pattern or dress up with a group to make it memorable.
