Kona Grill has been serving Scottsdale since 1998, but it’s fifth Arizona location at Scottsdale Quarter may be the best one yet.
At various times, a great new sushi restaurant opens up. Sometimes a spot for fresh, crispy flatbreads comes on the scene. Every once in a great while, a hip cocktail bar with a deep wine list joins the crowd. At the newest Kona Grill, all of this and more has happened under one very shiny roof.
Whether or not you’ve been to Kona Grill before, you will be impressed by the design of this one. The high ceilings, waterfall wall at the entrance and open dining areas make it easy to get lost in the surroundings.
The drink menu is able to please as many disparate tastes as the food menu. Whether you’re in the mood for a saké bomb or saké sangria or an Earl Grey Old Fashioned with Bulleit Bourbon, Earl Grey syrup and angostura bitters, Kona Grill has you covered. They also have some new handcrafted cocktails like the Summer in the City and the Cucumber Southside – two refreshing cocktails perfect for the warm weather.
In the starters portion of the menu, the potstickers are a great choice and easily shareable. Once again, there is a wide range of cuisines available and another worthy selection is the taco trio featuring braised kalua pork, shrimp and tempura black cod. You can also choose from a variety of salads or soups.
The sushi at Kona Grill is fresh and well-prepared. Even if you generally stick to the traditional sashimi selections or sushi rolls, the Jalapeno Yellowtail Sashimi and Picasso Roll were standouts that add a layer without taking away from the fish in the dish.
There are a variety of other, more “American”-style entrees available also. The previously mentioned flatbreads disappeared fast from the table and there are even more choices like pastas, steaks and sandwiches.
