Sustainable Lifestyle: Breakdown and Growth

Tracey Martin is a Sustainable Lifestyle Leader and author and has been a certified Transformational Life Coach as well as health, life and wellness advisor for more than 25 years. Tracey’s mission is simple, to protect our natural resources, planet, and our most precious resource: humankind. She is sharing her knowledge with us in this weekly column and this week Tracey talks about breakdown and growth.

We all know the pain we feel after a tough workout in the gym or out on a trail. The feeling that we really pushed ourselves. The sore feeling when we bend over or try and put on our shoes. What a great feeling! We know we made some progress and created change.

The principle behind this is that when we workout and breakdown our muscles, the body repairs or replaces damaged muscle fibers through a cellular process. The body actually fuses muscle fibers together to form new muscle protein strands. This process actually thickens and “grows” the muscle. Hypertrophy has occurred.

What if we could apply that same methodology to our minds? Growing and stretching to the point that we have created new brain pathways and neurons, really expanding our minds. Changing at a cellular level.

We first would have to be willing to be uncomfortable, to be stretched beyond our current situation. This may mean forgiving someone. Maybe healing from a past memory that has kept you stuck for years. It may even mean that we need to take a look in the mirror and own something about ourselves that needs to change. When we are willing to “stretch” our current belief system, we can then create lasting change in our own behavior. We can create new experiences which in turn creates growth. Personal evolution.

This process is not always an easy one to embrace. Usually, changing is very difficult and something that is met with a lot of resistance. However, when it becomes more painful to stay stuck and complacent than it does to change a particular behavior, we are willing to move forward.

Some people in your lives may not be able to handle this. They may not be able to be a part of your new journey. Honor them and let it go. This is your personal journey that no one else may understand. You do not need someone else’s approval to reach and grow into the person you are meant to be.

Forever forward is a good affirmation to start your day with, it is a visionary mindset that will serve you well.

Sustainably Yours,
Tracey xo
