Belgian-Colombian award-winning choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa–who choregraphed Frida–has created more than 100 works for 80 dance companies worldwide. The show’s score, featuring a variety of Mexican instruments, comes from British composer Peter Salem, while acclaimed Dutch designer Dieuweke van Reij created the costumes and set designs for the limited-time performance. Ballet Arizona also engaged a muralist, in addition to a scenic charge artist, to bring the design to life for the production.

Frida is a powerful ballet that will stay with audiences even after they leave the theater,” says Daniela Cardim, artistic director of Ballet Arizona, in a press release. “We are honored to have been chosen by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa to present the U.S. premiere and eagerly await its debut on our stage. From its striking sets and costumes to its enthralling choreography, Frida provides yet another lens through which to experience this enigmatic artist and icon.”

Mexican-born Kahlo is widely considered of the most intriguing artists of the 20th century. She fought taboos and through misfortune to champion women’s rights. Kahlo is well-known for her self-portraits, with some of her most famous works being The Two Fridas, Self-Portrait with Monkey, and Diego and I.
