Ballet Arizona’s ‘Round’ at the Desert Botanical Garden

In an exciting five-year collaboration with Desert Botanical Garden, Ballet Arizona presents its latest world premiere, Round.

Ib Andersen’s production is an immersive experience that celebrates man’s connection to nature and the intense beauty of the desert. The hour long performance showcases Andersen’s modern ballet choreography, set to the music of a wide variety of composers.

This talented company of dancers tell an impressive and beautiful story utilizing a series of complex cantilevers, partner maneuvers requiring trust, support, power and strength, demonstrating not only man’s connectedness to nature, but also to each other. The cast creatively incorporates light, leaping, faun like steps, and also the grace and fluidity of slower adagio movement that allows dancers to appear as though they are gently running in mid-air. Dancers move seamlessly from one step to the next, executing precise lifts silhouetted against the backdrop of the night sky.

The circular stage invites the audience to experience the production in-the-round from their own unique perspective. Dancers enter and exit from four ramps donning earth tones, metallic and bare skin. From the platform, to the choreography, to the feelings it evokes, Round demonstrates the beauty and mystery that connects us all.

The dancers of Round will perform nightly from May 17-June 4, Tuesday-Saturday at 8:15 pm. Audiences are invited to arrive early to enjoy a meal and wine by the bottle as the sun sets. Guests who arrive by 7 pm will be able to view the company technique class, taken as an ensemble, in the performance space.
