There are few brands more iconic than LEGO, whether for kiddos who are just getting into building bricks or adults who are long-time fans and collectors. To honor all things LEGO (from new-in-box sets to related accessories to birthday parties and events), Bricks & Minifigs is set to open Jan. 29 in North Phoenix. Here, Kat Blaz, owner of Bricks & Minifigs North Phoenix, discusses the new shop’s unique services, how it will serve the community and the allure of LEGO.
What inspired you to open a Brick & Minifigs location in North Phoenix? We’ve always been a LEGO-obsessed family. We visited relatives in Albuquerque six or seven years ago and they, knowing we are LEGO fanatics, took us to their local Brick & Minifigs (BAM) franchise store. Ever since then, it’s always been in the back of our minds of how cool it would be to own a BAM store and support our community in a fun and exciting new way. There’s really nothing like it where we live in the Valley.
We want to become a pillar of our community, to provide a service that schools, families and fans of LEGO of all ages can enjoy. The best way for us to do that is through a BAM store where everyone can take part.
What services will your store offer? We’re a one-stop aftermarket LEGO toy shop. We’re different from a LEGO store you’ll find in a mall. Our offerings goes beyond new-in-box sets. We buy, sell and trade all things LEGO. Like a LEGO store and the big-box stores, we sell new-in-box sets, but we also sell used and retired sets, minifigures, bulk pieces and other LEGO-related accessories.
We will begin offering birthday parties and private events in our store shortly after our grand opening. We’ll have various party and event packages that people can take advantage of.
We’re also planning on working with area grade schools to support S.T.E.A.M. initiatives and LEGO Clubs where children of all ages can use LEGO to continue learning and bolstering creativity.
What are you most excited about with the opening of the new store? What’s most exciting to us is the potential impact we’re going to have in serving our community. The excitement we see on both adults and children’s faces when we mention we’re going to open a LEGO store in their neighborhood is incredible. Opening a store gives us the opportunity to serve North Phoenix and surrounding areas to foster fun and learning in a safe environment in a way that hasn’t been previously available in our area.
LEGO truly appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds. Why do you think that is? LEGO is a unique product that encourages creativity at every age group. There’s a theme for everyone. Young children have Duplo. Ideas and Creator theme sets are a bit more complex and geared toward adults with other themes covering groups of all ages.
LEGO also carries a strong sense of nostalgia. Interestingly, most people can remember something about their first LEGO set (mine is the Black Monarch’s Ghost from 1990) and when they spot something similar, it brings them back to a specific, creative time in their lives. LEGO’s licensing agreements cross over into other fan favorites such as Star Wars, Marvel, Harry Potter, etc. Combining these elements makes LEGO very appealing.
During the grand opening event, “LEGO Masters” season two contestants Jen Smart and Michelle Brooks will be joining in the fun to meet with fans and sign autographs. Guests can shop and enter for their chance to win one of several raffle prizes while kids can take part in a scavenger hunt.
