Q: Where are you from?
A: Chicago, but I live in Los Angeles now.

Q: How long have you been doing comedy?
A: 15 years

Q: How was your first gig? Was it immediately gratifying, or did you bomb at first?
A: My first gig was in a bar in Chicago. I wrote my jokes over and over for hours before show time so I wouldn’t mess them up. It went just well enough that I wanted to do another one.

Q: What can comedy goers expect from you at Stand-Up, Scottsdale! this weekend?
A: You will hear material that I will do on Conan on Monday, and my forthcoming CD. Basically you’ll hear about being a guy in his thirties who dresses like he’s twelve, meeting a devil worshipper in Indiana, and if you’ve ever been dumped, you will appreciate my breakup story.

Q: What is the source of inspiration for your comedy?
A: Just my own life and strange way of seeing the world, which I think all comedians share. I see something and write it down, and then think, “How could I get a room full of strangers to think this is as funny as I do?”

Q: If you were a Muppet, which Muppet would you be? Which Muppet would you date?
A: I think Fozzie is the first standup comic I probably ever saw on TV, even if his jokes were intentionally bad, so I think every standup is a Fozzie at heart. And I would probably date Janis from Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. I’m a rock fan at heart, and never been into Miss Piggy, who I think is the only other female option. The parties would be great.

Q: Who would play you in the feature film of your life?
A: Me! Acting is intimidating, but I can’t think of a better role to learn the ropes on than the role of me. Should be easy to get the hang of.

Q: What’s an interesting fact that people wouldn’t know about you?
A: I had heart surgery when I was a kid, so the left side of my heart does what the right side of a regular heart does. For real! I’m OK, just an interesting fact.

Q: Where can people find more information about you? Anything coming up we should know about?
A: They can follow me on Twitter at twitter.com/johnroycomic. And as far as things coming up, watch me on Conan on TBS on Feb. 6th!

See John Roy at Stand Up, Scottsdale! Comedy Club February 3 and 4.
