Sustainable Lifestyle: Be In Service

Tracey Martin is a Sustainable Lifestyle Leader and author and has been a certified Transformational Life Coach as well as health, life and wellness advisor for more than 25 years. Traceyā€™s mission is simple, to protect our natural resources, planet, and our most precious resource: humankind. She is sharing her knowledge with us in this weekly column and this week Tracey shares with us some sure fire ways to brighten your day, week or month!

The best way to create a shift in your attitude is to put your focus on someone other than yourself. When we are going through a rough time we tend to focus so much energy and time on the ā€œproblemā€ or ā€œsituation.” We become consumed. We wake up and it is on our minds. We try to fall asleep at night and it is blocking us from that beautiful dream land.

First Thought – Get clarity. Can this problem be solved or does it need to be managed? There are a lot of things in our world that canā€™t just simply be solved. There are situations we are going through that need to be managed. Get out ahead of it with a clear mind.

Gaining perspective – Volunteer. There are some wonderful places that could really use your help.

If you love animals. Consider fostering a sweet fur baby. If fostering is not an option, lots of shelters and rescues would be happy to see you. If you don’t have a lot of time. Consider donating food or supplies. These are always needed.

How about helping out some well deserving kids? Maybe snuggle some beautiful new borns in the NICU. Phoenix Childrenā€™s Hospital has an amazing volunteer program. They will teach you what is required for which ever position you fill.

Random Acts of Kindness. This is the simplest and easiest way to make a big difference. If you are unable to commit to a scheduled volunteering program, this is the next best thing. It can be as simple as buying a strangers lunch or coffee. If you are feeling really generous while you are at the grocery store, buy someoneā€™s groceries.

We all love to receive mail. Not the electronic type. Real letters in the mailbox. Go by the store and grab a few cute cards. They can say anything from thinking of you, encouraging you or maybe just missing you. Fill them out and send them to people you haven’t seen in awhile. Or, just call your mom and be present in the conversation!

Cook for someone. Do you know someone who is under the weather? Or maybe for your local firehouse. You might even get a ride in the fire engine. I did!

ā€œtime is the most precious gift of allā€

Bonus: Make this a family affair. Teaching your kids to be of service is a great life skill.

Sustainably Yours,
Tracey xo
