Sustainable Lifestyle: Documentaries to Watch

Tracey Martin is a Sustainable Lifestyle Leader and author and has been a certified Transformational Life Coach as well as health, life and wellness advisor for more than 25 years. Tracey’s mission is simple, to protect our natural resources, planet, and our most precious resource: humankind. She is sharing her knowledge with us in this weekly column and this week Tracey shares with us how you can make your movie nights count.

I was recently invited to be on a Social Justice Impact panel for the San Diego International Film Festival. Some of the documentaries that we were screening left a permanent mark on me. The panel participants spoke on human trafficking, refugees crisis, consumer behavior and the toxic nature of our world.

So many times we look at TV and complain about what is on. Nothing inspiring. Nothing educational for the entire family. Even at theaters, there doesn’t seem to be anything good on except a lot of violence, corruption and sex. Not something you need to be feeding your brain on a regular basis. We can get that by watching the news or hanging out on social media.

It is said that you are what you eat. I believe the same goes for what you feed your brain. Books, music, movies and TV shows.

How about taking this time to inspire, educate and make your family think in a more positive, worldly manner? How about a great Netflix night of documentaries? These kinds of films can empower you with your own wellness. Bring awareness to things going on in the world and make you want to help others.

A few of my recommendations:

What the Health – This film makes you think about the food choices you are making. You will begin to question the organizations that are put in place to regulate our health guidelines, our food supply and the trusted information we are seeking.

I Am – This is one of my favorite films. It has a way of putting things in perspective. What brings us true joy and happiness? Can we do more to help others?

The Minimalist – This film will make you take a hard look at what you own and why. How you consume. Our homes are bursting at the seams with stuff. We even have storage units for all the stuff that won’t fit into our homes. How much do we really need?

Next time your children complain and say there is nothing to watch or you can’t decide on a film, head over to Netflix. Make your movie nights count and expand the knowledge of our world within your own homes.

Sustainably Yours,
Tracey xo
