Sustainable Lifestyle: Why You Workout

Tracey Martin is a Sustainable Lifestyle Leader and author and has been a certified Transformational Life Coach as well as health, life and wellness advisor for more than 25 years. Traceyā€™s mission is simple, to protect our natural resources, planet, and our most precious resource: humankind. She is sharing her knowledge with us in this weekly column and this week Tracey builds on defining your “why” and how it pertains to your workouts.

Continuing on last weeks column speaking about defining your ā€œwhyā€ with your food choices, let’s take it to the workouts.

Starting with the questions: Why do you want to workout? What kind of workouts do you like? What kind of workout will become a good habit in your life? Will it become a part of your commitment to a healthier lifestyle?

You need to be specific in all your goals. To say ā€œI want to be in shapeā€ is not enough. What does ā€œin shape” mean to you? These are the things that can keep us from reaching those lofty goals we set for ourselves. We have an overview of what we want but we aren’t specific enough so we can make them become a part of our reality. We continue to compare out fitness path to someone elseā€™s and theirā€™s may not be aligned with ours.

For example:

If you are putting a marathon on your calendar this year, you might want to find a specific place to help increase your stamina and teach you recovery methods. As well as strengthen core muscles and perfect your stride. Maybe a HIIT training method will work best for you, such as F45 Training.

If overall strength, stability and fitness is your goal, you might want to chose a place that offers an array of cross training like Lifetime Fitness. This might include weights, specific classes and even some yoga to really round out your plan.

Are you loving the spin class and cycle vibe? We have some great ones in our city. I taught spin classes for about 6 years, back when it was really getting started. FlyWheel at Scottsdale Quarter reminds me of those fun days.

If you don’t want to join a gym or have to drive somewhere there are some great options with apps and in home training. Done on your schedule, no need to wait for a class to start! One of my favorites is the new one by Brooke Burke Body.

Maybe you want to be outdoors more and enjoy this gorgeous weather. Hiking requires only one thing from you… a little time. We have some amazing trails here. One of my favorites is Tomā€™s Thumb in North Scottsdale. There are multiple trails depending upon your current fitness level. The views will never disappoint.

Hopefully, I have given you some ideas and removed a few obstacles and excuses. I encourage you to find something that you love. Begin to define your fitness goals and commit to them. It will be one of the most important commitments you will ever make to yourself. Start where you are and with what you have available. Finding a great community that supports you in your goals is just a bonus.

Sustainably Yours,
Tracey xo
