2022 Home Design Trends

Wainscoting and Wallpapering

Unique wall textures will be sticking around into the new year too. We will be seeing an array of styles, colors and prints through the use of wall materials such as wallpaper or wainscot! Whether it is applied on the wall or on the ceiling, wallpaper has the ability to create a “Wow!” moment the minute you step into a space.

Floral wallpaper, for example, is available in an infinite amount of designs and depending on the color and scale of the print, it can help set the mood for the entire space. For example, flowers that come in muted tones and are smaller in scale tend to give off a more traditional aesthetic as opposed to a print that features large, bold, colored flowers as these tend to bring a more modern aesthetic. This can be interpreted similarly with most prints including animals, architecture, nature, landscapes and even food.

The creative design community is constantly innovating and coming up with fresh ways to convert past trends into something that is relevant and appealing in the present day. This can be seen in the way wainscoting has been making a comeback over the last few years. When done right, it can be a feature piece that transforms a room with materials as simple as wood panels and paint. There aren’t many rules around how wainscot should look, but there are certain ways to create a statement. Simplicity is key, but this doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Monochromatic walls, featuring a simple wainscot design on the lower half of a wall only and painted in the same color, is a sophisticated way to add dimension. For the ultimate wainscot approach, try very thin beadboard panels instead of the traditional shiplap planks and see what a big difference that makes.

Trending Colors

After years of rolling with all the earthy tones and neutral colors, I anticipate 2022 to show up pushing the boundaries in home design. Interiors follow fashion, and some color trends I have been noticing in designer runways for the upcoming year are all bright and bold. Sunset oranges and vintage yellows will be showing up in the home in small doses such as furniture pieces or textured pillows that will spark some joy. The idea of incorporating color in items that are easier to change throughout the seasons is becoming more common, allowing people to have more fun with the things they bring into their home.

Richer, yet still bold colors, like Kelly green, will come in making greater statements in the home including tiled accent walls and pretty wallpaper moments. We’ve seen the color green become an unconventional neutral at this point, so changing up the saturation and levels of this powerful color will add interest to many homes in the upcoming year.

Lastly, I imagine deeper colors in general will be taking over walls pretty soon. Bright, light and airy spaces have been popular for a really long time now (don’t get me wrong, I’m still rooting for white painted walls) but I think the design world will be shifting towards making greater impacts with wall paint by using colors like navy blues and muddy greens on the walls, especially in spaces with lots of natural light.
