Jazz Nights at The Ravenscroft

June 8

The popular Scottsdale jazz venue The Ravenscroft is ending its successful show season with a bang. Locals are encouraged to catch one of the final sets this June, with select shows taking place each weekend, from June 1 to June 29.

Jazzbird Nights: OR Bareket Quartet
Saturday, June 1st at 7:00PM
Jazzbird welcomes the OR Bareket Quartet featuring prominent bassist OR Berket and his eclectic approach to jazz music. Bareket’s distinct lyricism, rhythmic dexterity, and groove-centric approach are clearly present in his playing and writing alike. The Or Bareket Quartet is a container for the ongoing exploration of spaces between and within languages and cultures. Its four group members use Bareket’s original compositions as a vehicle through which to metabolize and integrate the different worlds and experiences they inhabit into a cohesive sound that accommodates all of it and dilutes none of it.

Jazzbird Nights: Natalie Gallatin Quintet
Friday, June 7th at 7:00PM
Natalie is a saxophonist, composer, bandleader, educator, recording artist, and activist based in Phoenix, Arizona. She is a 21st century torchbearer for the performance, education, and re-evaluation of the rich heritage of jazz music. Gallatin is very excited to share the stage with friends and mentors to showcase a night of her original compositions. She’ll be bringing work from her album, Noodles, as well as some newer compositions that have yet to be recorded.

Jazzbird Nights: Rosetta Verde Flamenco Trio
Friday, June 14th at 7:00PM
Rosetta Verde met years ago in Jazz ensemble at ASU. They formed a funk/fusion band that they dubbed Green Rosetta. Later, members Kris Hill (guitar), Adrian Goldenthal (bass) and Emerson Laffey (percussion) each took their own path to finding flamenco. Since then, the members of Rosetta Verde have all worked with many fantastic flamenco groups over the years. It was only natural that they reunite to put their own stamp on flamenco, reconstituting the band with its Spanish translation: ‘Rosetta Verde’. This new incarnation blends their varied musical experiences to create a modern flamenco sound.

Jazzbird Nights: Roots of Unity
Friday June 21st at 7:00PM
In mathematics, roots of unity are complex roots of the number 1. As the name of the band, Roots of Unity symbolizes Yuwen’s distinctive brand of artistic monism. The search for meaning, clarity, and clarity of meaning where none exists is not an artistic endeavor — it is a human one. Yuwen’s latest works reimagine form and narrative structure in a way that reinstates the primacy of melody and rhythm while blurring the line between darkness and beauty.

Jazz for the Soul: Francine Reed
Sunday, June 23rd at 6:00PM
Francine Reed, the “Queen of the blues” and Phoenix treasure, sets the standard high when she takes the stage. This local legend is known for her powerful voice and commanding stage presence, Reed sings an eclectic repertoire of jazz, blues, gospel, and rhythm and blues! Reed has recorded two albums for the Ichiban label in 1995 (I Want You To Love Me) and 1996 (I Can’t Make It On My Own) in 1999 she recorded (Shades Of Blue) for the Intersound label. She’s also recorded a family Gospel album. In addition to her impressive recording history, Reed has sung several TV commercials and Tom Cruise cranks her album up in a scene from the 1993 movie The Firm.

Jazzbird Nights: Tjader Project
Friday, June 28th at 7:00PM
Witness the Tjader Project– a tribute to the late great Cal Tjader, vibraphonist, band leader and composer, who revolutionized Latin Jazz! Compositions played will reflect the music of Cal Tjader spanning decades, with a driving rhythm section supported by memorable melodies. The audience will be transported back in time to an era when Latin Jazz was thriving as we groove and celebrate the final Jazzbird performance of Ravenscroft’s wonderful 3rd season!

Valley Jazz Cooperative Alumni Band
Saturday, June 29th at 7:00PM
The jazz ensemble, under the direction of Russell Schmidt, features talented young musicians who were previously members of the VJC during their high school years. This exceptionally gifted alumni group presents a concert each June, allowing these creative artists to reconnect and make music once more. Founded in 2016, the VJC is an educational outreach of MSW Ministries. Instruction is focused on expanding the creativity of VJC members through developing improvisation skills and learning the language of jazz. The main VJC program runs annually between December and May and is offered free of charge to eligible, committed, passionate music students (grades 8-12). The Alumni Band program started in 2022, and the group begins its rehearsal schedule each year upon the conclusion of the JHS/HS program.

Ticket prices vary depending on the selected show and date.
