World of Chalk
On Saturday, April 30, Tempe Marketplace will transform into a space full of art, culture and music to host the second annual World of Chalk celebration.
In partnership with the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, Tempe Marketplace will fill with large-scale chalk art murals, diverse song and dance, color and life in this free community event for the whole family to enjoy.
This year, from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m., step into a world of art with live created chalk murals, community performances, interactive chalk art mural, and an outdoor pop-up bar sponsored by Dave & Buster’s. In the Kid Zone, artist Debra Lee Murrow will assist children in a music-inspired community mural over 20-feet long. Each artist participating in World of Chalk pulls inspiration from a personal, unique source such as culture, emotion, healing and more.
Judith Gary, a participating artist based in Tucson, is inspired by the beautiful desert surroundings. She will create a mural motivated by the musicians of the Andes in South America. Meanwhile, Alejandra Trujillo, who was raised in Nogales, will theme her mural on the music of Mexico and Mariachi. Plus, international artist, Laura Thurbon’s mural theme will be Japanese Taiko drumming by geisha. Victor Navarro will create American Yaqui Dancer, pulling from the motion of the music along with diversity, identity, culture and emotion. Other artists who will be in attendance, designing chalk murals to the music include Anthony “Eli” Farias and Kyle Chansley.
Tempe Marketplace will also host several musical acts and artists for chalk artists to pull inspiration from while spectators sway along to the beat. Live performances include Mariachi Las Panteras de Oro from Maryvale High School, Cesar Chavez High School Drumline, Island Music Magic and Traveler, who fuse music from around the world to find their unique sound.
