Each week we will be highlighting one of the fabulous emerging designers from Phoenix Fashion Week 2018. This week, meet Koran Fields-Cameron, the Owner of WVSH, a brand that offers lifestyle pieces for the young visionary.
Hometown: Austin, TX
First fashion job: My first fashion job is Flashbacks in San Diego making outfits for retro parties and festivals.
When did you know you had a passion for fashion: I wouldn’t say I have a passion for fashion but art in general. Fashion is just my medium at the moment that i’m monetizing but I knew as a young child I wanted to be an artist for a living I just wasn’t sure how I would bring that to fruition.
Person who has impacted your life the most: The person who has impacted my life the most is my mother. She’s dope and for awhile it was just us two.
Your biggest fashion accomplishment in your eyes: My biggest fashion accomplishment in my eyes was my first collection. I had no idea how to make clothes I just took design classes at my local community college and had no idea what I was doing. Just the fact that I got a whole collection off the ground and having it actually look good was a great start.
The biggest obstacle you have overcome: The biggest obstacle I have overcome is the transition from being in the military to owning a company. There were a lot of downs and questionable decisions I made before I washed up on the shores of fashion design.
A designer who inspires you: A designer who inspires me right now is Virgil. He went from college to making a basic streetwear company to a luxury streetwear company to Louis Vuitton. That’s just crazy.
Favorite quote: On a good day I’m okay, on a bad day I’m okay.
Advice to someone pursuing a career in fashion as a designer: Have everything you need to launch ready before you launch. Launching early is a huge struggle and no one cares about what you’re going through they just want a consistent product.
How has the Phoenix Fashion Week #DesignerBootcamp impacted your brand? It has given me a blueprint as well as a platform to grow my business. I came into this whole deal pretty green and now I have a good grasp on how things need to be in order to succeed in this tough industry.
Favorite piece you have ever designed: My repurposed denim jacket
