Fab Interior Designer: Mackenzie Collier of Mackenzie Collier Interiors

How did you get into interior design? I first became interested in design when my mom started a decorating business when I was a young child. I grew up around design, and loved playing with material samples and drafting imaginary floor plans on graph paper (mostly of horse barns, lol). Later down the road, I started studying psychology instead of design, but then changed course and went back to interior design. Since then, it’s been an exciting journey to build my business and grow.

How has the pandemic affected your industry? It’s been kind of strange. We’ve been getting a ton of new business because of the real estate boom, but we’re seeing an increase in prices and longer lead times on everything from construction to labor to product furnishings–so it’s not a great time to take on those projects. By explaining to clients how lead times are becoming longer and more expensive during the discovery call helps to remain transparent about the changing industry with clients. This allows our team to better understand the client’s goals and expectations as well as offer insights to the clients when they are thinking about their timeline and budget.

What is your best advice for achieving timeless interior design? I always advise clients to design their interiors to coordinate with the architecture of their house. Go with whatever styles, materials and finishes that would be appropriate for that style home. When you do this, you aren’t following fads or trends that will come and go, but you’re setting yourself up for a design that will stand the test of time that is both aesthetically appealing yet still functional.

Most memorable design project? It’s impossible to pick just one. I really loved the project we took on with Architect David Dick for clients we had in Paradise Valley. (In our portfolio, it’s called Eames, Dreams and Poolside in Palm Springs). I loved that the colors were really unusual and bold, but also easy to live with.

Tip for a homeowner about to embark on a home design project? Get organized and make a list of everything you need. Then make a realistic budget range for each item. Add it all up for a total budget and adjust if you need to. It’s better to go into a project having a good idea where you plan to spend and splurge, so you can maximize your budget. If your project involves labor, get ballpark quotes early on so you can plan it into your budget.

Favorite Arizona-based retailers or home décor brands? I love Local Nomad. They have beautiful handmade gifts for the home! Practical Art is also amazing for art and home accessories–all made by local artists, of course.
