Dad to: Alexis, 26; Joaquin, 16; Diego, 16; and Mateo, 5.

Hometown: Phoenix

Favorite ways to spend family time in AZ: We love to be out and about in Phoenix especially eating at our favorite restaurants in the Arcadia area. My kids are all either golfing or playing soccer so that means we are usually driving around to see them play.  Traveling is also something my wife and I plan as much as possible, whether it’s a staycation, a trip to a cabin up north or traveling out of state. Wherever we go, I’m ready!

Your most rewarding fatherhood moment: As a dad of four boys, there have been plenty of rewarding moments that span across all them. When I watch them hit that golf ball their farthest, score a goal or getting their first job have all made me get a little emotional as it also means they are growing up and I’m getting old. As a whole, I feel most rewarded when I see all of them together laying or usually wrestling on the couch. I take a moment and think how and lucky I am just to be their dad.

Biggest challenge as a dad: My biggest challenge especially as my boys get older is to see them live through any sort of hurt or allowing the space for them to make more and more decisions on their own. Seeing them grow up into young men and take on more responsibilities is a reminder that one day they will be doing life the way that makes sense for them. I just hope that the many stories I’ve shared stay in their memories to help aid in their decision-making process.

A father who inspires you and why: Being raised by a single mother I really do look to my memories of what my mom did and how she raised me and my siblings. I also rely heavily on the memories of my grandfather who was tough but loving. Every moment spent with him was filled with a lesson or story reminding us how important our Mexican culture is, to always work hard and to dream big. I try to parent the same way.

Best piece of advice for a new dad: I would tell a new dad to be aware that kids look and see everything you do. Show them what it’s like to have positive relationships, show emotion with your kids, love them hard and have high expectations. And as hard as it will be, allow them to fail, show them how to try hard things and pick them up physically and emotionally.

Your biggest hope for your children: I want for my boys to really get everything out of life. Explore, imagine, push boundaries, learn from pain, and grow to be men that embrace all people. With all that, I hope they will laugh along the way.

How are you celebrating Father’s Day? Usually my wife and kids think of something to do, but really anything, hanging out with them, Spanish music playing and probably a table full of food.
