Fab Foodie: Write on Rubee

Christina Barrueta—the food, beverage, and travel writer behind Write on Rubee—has spent her career spotlighting inspiring food communities across the globe, and now specifically, in Arizona. She’s gone on to author two food and drink-centric books, and is also the Arizona Contributing Editor at The SOMM Journal.

Best hidden food gem in Arizona: Word has spread since I attended the inaugural dinner of Lom Wong in June 2019, but this amazing Thai pop-up still feels hidden. Sunny and Alex Martin hold multi-course feasts in their home where they share cultural stories and educate guests on authentic regional recipes, many from the small villages in Thailand they’ve visited. They also offer themed three-course dinners for pick-up every weekend. Sign up for their newsletter to get all the details every Monday – they regularly sell out in just a few hours.

Advice for someone looking to build a meaningful digital following: Share your message in a positive way, and be kind and welcoming. I started because I simply wanted to document my food, drink and travel adventures and get the word out about our Arizona talent. Everyone in social media has a different story to tell and personality to share, and I love hearing the positive voices that uplift our community, especially in the culinary and restaurant arena where I post.

A Valley-based chef or restaurateur who inspires you and why: After any time I spend with Mark Tarbell, I walk away so impressed with his knowledge, kindness, patience and generosity. He is a huge community supporter, and is always so jovial and willing to help others. And. of course, talented – I’m a big fan of his restaurants and wine store and the PBS show he hosts, Plate & Pour, which spotlights Arizona.

What would you like to see more of in the Arizona food scene: That’s a good question! It would have been easier for me to answer that question 10 years ago. I’m happy right now to see Arizona getting the attention it deserves as a food destination. On a personal note, it was exciting that an international publisher would welcome a book called Phoenix Cooks about its restaurants and chefs, so that shows others are taking note, and I think our scene just keeps getting better and better.
