Fab Mixologists

Jason Asher

Jason Asher—the founding Partner of Barter & Shake Creative Hospitality (the creative group behind cocktail bars like Century Grand and UnderTow)—boasts over 20 years of hospitality experience. Jason has collected a number of accolades through his experience in mixology and spirits, including “Top 100 Culinary Trendsetters” by the Scottsdale Culinary Festival, “Best Mixologist” by Arizona Restaurant Association’s Foodist Awards, GQ Bombay Sapphire’s Most Inspired Bartender and Food Network’s Chopped “Champion.”

Best part of working in the Valley’s mixology scene? I have loved watching this community grow, from launching the Phoenix USBG chapter and the inaugural Arizona Cocktail Week to the incredible growth of cocktail bar concepts across the Valley. As a business owner myself, seeing people who once were bartenders move on to become a manager, mentor, create and run beverage programs, and eventually open their business is nothing short of inspiring. Many of these individuals came through our doors at one point or another! Being a part of that process has been an honor, no matter how small or large.

Go-to drink? I love a good margarita! I have an affinity for tequila (and mezcal). I’ve traveled to Mexico many times to see the production of these spirits. There is so much heritage, history, and variation in flavor it’s hard not the fall in love.

Best advice to an aspiring bartender or mixologist? As for the bartender seeking career advice, my advice is always the same: be smart with your money. Bartending is a wonderful job offering you an opportunity to connect with others and make great money. Unfortunately, many of us weren’t taught how to invest in our future when we were young. Put a percentage away every time you get paid. That way, you can afford to travel, get inspired, and hopefully open your own place someday.
