Each week we will be highlighting one of the fabulous emerging designers from Phoenix Fashion Week 2018. This week, meet Marissa Barlow, the 19-year-old creator of Nani Swimwear, an active swimwear line for adventure-seeking women.
Hometown: Smithfield, Utah
First fashion job: this one! My first job in fashion is actually designing swimsuits for Nani.
When did you know you had a passion for fashion: the first time I walked into “Justice” as a little girl.
Person who has impacted your life the most: I know it sounds cliché, but my mom (and now business partner!) has pushed me and helped provide countless opportunities in my life.
Your biggest fashion accomplishment in your eyes: My biggest fashion accomplishment was having the courage to start Nani, from literally nothing, as a senior in high school.
The biggest obstacle you have overcome: By far the hardest part of being a young designer has been gaining trust and credibility from adults.
A designer who inspires you: Calvin Klein
Favorite quote: “What if I fall? Oh, my darling what if you fly?”
Advice to someone pursuing a career in fashion as a designer: Be brave, be curious, and most importantly be willing work hard for your dream.
How has the Phoenix Fashion Week #DesignerBootcamp impacted your brand? We have used our new brand message to really focus on reaching our ideal client instead of just selling cute swimsuits to everyone. It made it easier to create new designs that zero in on this niche and it has inspired us to use new marketing strategies that attract our specific customer.
