Fabulous People: Charles B. Golding

Charles B. Golding is a Phoenix-based author, with “Max The Potato Beetle” being his most recent release. As a teenager, his love of books, fantasies and adventure stories began, before writing his own poetry and stories after he became a father. Learn about Charles B. Golding…

Hometown: Grew up in Winter Park, Florida (a suburb of Orlando)

First job: Mowing lawns

Favorite ways to spend your free time in AZ: Hiking, going to Sedona, working out, laughing with friends, writing.

Your biggest accomplishment and why: Turning a supply department around in the US Navy and getting the Navy Achievement Medal for it.

The biggest obstacle you overcame: I have a lazy eye, and depth perception is a real problem for me.

Someone who inspires you and why: I love the great artists and poets like Dante and Shakespeare but the person who inspires me most is a young woman named Little Margaret of Castello. Born crippled in 1287 and blind to an aristocratic family in Italy, they disowned her and left her on the streets in the town of Castello. She never gave up and helped prisoners and performed many miracles. So she is my hero.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Keep learning and learn the philosophy of your profession, not just the techniques.

Favorite quote: Other than “Everyone is somebody else’s weirdo,” I guess Shakespeare’s “If music is the food of love, play on.”

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I love to sing and play the harmonica to any song, I mean any, on iTunes or Eurovision in my own room.

What makes someone fabulous: Someone you know you can trust, is full of love and joy. That makes your life better and full of hope, even if they are selling you French fries as a local street vendor. This happened to my children and me. A street vendor making nothing showed us all joy and attracted us to him because of his joy for life. That encounter was 20 years ago, for three minutes, and we still talk about it. That is fabulous!
