Hometown:  Bakersfield, CA

First job: I painted street address numbers on the gutters in front of homes. I had a two-dollar charge and a four-dollar charge. The four-dollar cost had reflective crystals in it so it would show up better at night. I had been training for the Olympic trials in swimming and became very ill and bedridden. So I went back home to recover, and when I started to feel better, I started this business to earn money and get me outside and starting to get stronger.

Favorite AZ restaurant: Tee Pee. I used to live nearby and would meet friends there. Many memories.

The person who has impacted your life the most: My father taught me to always to try to be better but to be humble. My mother taught me to strive for more and exposed me to the world of alternative medicine and thinking outside the box regarding traditional medicine.

Your biggest accomplishment in your eyes: When I was little, I had a hip disease and had to wear a leg brace. The other kids would not play with me and used to tease me. I was told I would never be able to run or play sports. I use to stutter when I was young. I was at the lowest level of kids in my grade in elementary school. My mother gave me a natural mixture every day to help my hip. A few years later, I set my elementary school record for the mile run. My parents worked on my stuttering every day after school. I ran for elementary school president and was so nervous about giving my campaign speech because I did not want to stutter. I was successful and won the election. Every chance my dad got, he worked on my math and English. By the time I was in the 6th grade, I was at the top of my class, but I worked hard to stay there.

The biggest obstacle you have overcome: I had always wanted to go to the Olympics in swimming. When I became ill and started my address painting business, I realized I would never recover and make it to the Olympics. I had to pick myself up and make something with the rest of my life even though I thought myself a failure.

Someone who inspires you: Dr. Mark Smith has always inspired me to be a better surgeon and want to have a better understanding of women and their problems. Dr. Dan O’Keeffe taught me to learn as much as you can about any subject and to push yourself, whether helping people or when participating in extreme sports.

Favorite quote: “My dear, you are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober, and you will still be ugly.” by Winston Churchill or Clint Eastwood’s whole “I know what you’re thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five?” thing.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Learn as much as you can about every other medical field before you decide on your path.

What you think makes someone fabulous: Someone who thinks and looks ahead. Always be moving forward.
