Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky

First job: My first job was actually over five summers aged 11 to 16 when I cut approximately 10 neighbors’ lawns for spending money making $6 per lawn.

Favorite ways to spend your free time in AZ: I’m in the process of moving to Arizona so haven’t spent much time here, but in my free time my wife and I are exploring the mountains, the desert, the wildlife and the incredible rainless and humidity-less weather.

Your biggest accomplishment and why: Professionally would be to: become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the most distinguished surgical society in the world; and have the honor of caring for over 500 marines and soldiers injured in Afghanistan and Iraq during my military career.

Personally would be to: have the honor to serve my country in the US Navy for 23 years; become a member of the oldest (not so secret) fraternity in the world, the Freemasons, as well as a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and a Shriner.

The biggest obstacle you overcame: Fear of heights modestly relieved by becoming a private general aviation pilot and reluctantly riding on roller coasters when persuaded by my wife.

Someone who inspires you and why: As a teen, I was inspired by my pediatrician to seek out a career in medicine helping people. As a teen and young adult, I was inspired by Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. As a young boy, I was inspired by Neil Armstrong (and I knew his son Ricky) and Buzz Aldrin to the fascination of space exploration renewed as an older adult by the steadfast resolve and fortitude of Elon Musk. As a boy and teen, I was inspired to succeed in whatever I chose to do with my life by my parents who instilled in me the quest for excellence now reinforced as an older adult by the exemplary life of my selfless, loyal, brilliant and benevolent caring and loving wife.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Be honest with yourself and have an aptitude for caring about people; if its science you’re interested in, become a biomedical researcher or engineer and reach for the stars (literally!) Always strive for excellence and remember medicine and particularly surgery aren’t for cutting corners.

Favorite quote: “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” –Walt Disney

Something someone would be surprised to learn about you: I’m learning how to play the drums. I have a private pilot’s license. I’m a Freemason, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite and a Shriner.

What makes someone fabulous: Their character…honesty, loyalty, responsibility and integrity.
