James B. Mallory, Jr. DMD is the owner doctor of multiple practices in Surprise, Desert Ridge, Uptown and most recently Scottsdale. First job: My first job was at age 13. I convinced my friend’s dad to let me borrow his lawn mower so I could mow lawns in the neighborhood. As soon as I turned 16 I got a job as a server at a Mexican Cantina.
Favorite AZ restaurant: By far my favorite restaurant is True Food Kitchen- the food is clean and healthy and the atmosphere is vibrant! But let’s be honest, they have the best margaritas!
Person who has impacted your life the most: My two children have impacted my life the most! I’ve had the honor (and challenge) of raising my kids as a single dad all through dental school. For those of you who may not know, dental school is incredibly demanding and extremely difficult. The sacrifice and determination required to succeed taught me so many lessons, but more importantly my relationship with my children is what drives me.
Your biggest accomplishment in your eyes: My biggest accomplishment is actually so simple. It’s just being happy! I used to be my worst critic. I was so hard on myself and spoke to myself in such a harsh way, that it made it difficult to be happy. That’s why I chose to start the journey of self-love. I’ve learned that self-love manifests itself in many areas of our lives! From the foods I eat to the exercises I do, to the personal and professional relationships I choose to keep, I’m the happiest and healthiest I’ve ever been!
The biggest obstacle you have overcome: This biggest obstacle I’ve had to overcome in life is change. Change tends to throw a wrench in our plans doesn’t it? Therefore, I like to look at change as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. After all, the only thing constant in life is change.
Someone who inspires you: Many people inspire me on a daily basis. Listening to stories of success and achievements is just something I love! Watching others overcome challenges and still be happy offers lessons that enrich my own life. I try to help those around me to be elevated, and that’s inspiring.

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: I’ve learned that talent is often not the reason a person finds success. Sure, talent helps, but it’s not necessary. You have to show up. Work. Never give up. Always push forward and don’t let anything get in the way of what you want.
What makes someone fabulous: A good heart, enthusiasm, joy. Oh… and a great pair of shoes!
