Fabulous People: Tyler Baldwin

While you will likely recognize Tyler Baldwin for his work in front of the camera at 3TV and CBS5, he is now the national sales director for RCG Valuation. In trading microphones for drones, the Arizona native is using cameras to shelter taxes for property owners using cost segregation studies. Learn about Tyler Baldwin…

Hometown: Phoenix. I grew up near Central and Camelback.

First job: I had a lot of random jobs as a teenager: paid dinner theater actor, selling guns, internet radio program director. But I think my first official W2 was as a busboy for a hamburger joint in East Tennessee.

Favorite ways to spend your free time in AZ: Boy, has this answer changed in 2020. Iā€™m always looking forward to a good olā€™ driveway party.

The person who has impacted your life the most and why: My father. I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was working several jobs to pay for ASU. Then, after I switched my major for the 10th time, it was my father who gave me the best advice Iā€™ve ever received. He said, ā€œWave a magic wand and make a wish. That wish is for your dream job. Then, just go do it.ā€

Your biggest accomplishment in your eyes and why: Winning an Emmy. I didnā€™t make winning trophies a priority when I was in the industry. When I see that statue on the bookshelf, itā€™s a real source of pride.

The biggest obstacle you have overcome: I struggled with poverty growing up. I had some rough high school years. I spent most of that time on the free lunch program, and eventually moved out of the house as a 16-year-old. Fortunately, I had a lot of great friends and a strong support system. I managed to maintain great grades. And, I somehow clawed my way to a college degree.

Someone who inspires you and why: My kids. I am so lucky to be blessed with two perfect daughters. Macy is 9 and Bella is 5. I work very hard to provide them with the best possible life. I also have to work very hard to understand how they answer math problems in 2020. Itā€™s crazy.

Favorite quote: ā€œI hate people, but I love gatherings.ā€

Advice to someone pursuing a career path in what you do: Obviously, if you want to become a national sales director for a rapidly expanding tech company, I wouldnā€™t recommend you also get a broadcast journalism degree and spend several years covering pro athletes. However, I would recommend that you never stop learning because you never know what kind of knowledge you will need tomorrow.

What you think makes someone fabulous: Passion is so important. I donā€™t care if youā€™re passionate about ending world hunger or TikTok dances. Either way, it makes for a fabulous conversation.
