Restaurant of the Week: Chop, Block & Brew

When your mind turns to destination dining, Maricopa, Arizona usually is not the destination. Chop, Block & Brew, the new restaurant at Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino, is out to change that.

At first glance, the lively lounge that forms a welcome barrier between the restaurant and the sights and sounds (and smoky smells) of the casino suggests a casual, brewpub-style experience. Step past the host stand, however, and the elegant Native artwork lining the walls combines with the rustic layout to elevate the atmosphere to “upscale”, while remaining relaxed enough for a vacationing family or a post-marathon-slot-session meal.

The house cocktails feature standards that cover all the main liquors and will please those who prefer spirits over beer and wine. Where Chop, Block & Brew makes its mark is with the 37 beers it offers. Arizona favorites like Oak Creek Brewery’s Nut Brown Ale and Barrio Brewing’s Blonde Ale are available on draft and a selection of favorites from across the US dot the draft and bottle list. You can also sample four different draft selections in a tasting flight. If you don’t think beer pairings are meant for high-end restaurants, guess again.

If you weren’t sure if you were in a creative, chef-driven restaurant, one peek at the appetizers, soups and salads will let you know. Add chicken or shrimp to one of the sizable salads, and you have a meal by itself. The Block Salad features contrasting textures thanks to heirloom cherry tomatoes, strawberries, walnuts and dried figs. The Point Reyes bleu cheese must be mentioned as well, since it’s one of the best parts of the dish. The Brew Salad is a massive chopped salad. Appetizers like prime rib fondue with rich gruyere cheese is the first of many smoked dishes you will encounter throughout the menu.

If you didn’t get enough smoked prime rib in the fondue, you can order the Smoked Prime Rib entree. It’s available in 12, 16, or 24 oz. The wide variety of steaks, sides, and add-ons give away the game that you’re in a world-class steakhouse. The flavorful Bone-in Ribeye is one of four cuts cooked sous vide, almost guaranteeing a perfect temperature throughout. The “Signatures” off the steak menu include a pappardelle in clam sauce. There’s a Kurobuta Double Bone-in Pork Chop that will change how you feel about ordering a pork chop at a steakhouse.
