Restaurant of the Week: ALMA Scottsdale

Since opening its doors this past winter, ALMA has brought a taste of the Southwest and authentic Mexican cuisine to Scottsdale with its assortment of inspired dishes, from roasted duck carnitas to lobster quesadillas.

ALMA in Scottsdale offers a boho-chic element to its design, with inspiration pulled from the desert with pops of vibrant color. You will find eccentric decor, like the Insta-worthy candle wall or the various cow skulls that can be found throughout the space. There is both indoor and outdoor seating available, with the indoor dining space allowing for a more private, cozy setting, and the outdoor space comprising an oversized patio with a large fire pit. Regardless of where you sit, ALMA is the perfect setting to grab a cocktail and catch up with friends or enjoy a romantic evening for two.

ALMA is a woman-owned and -operated spot that focuses heavily on using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. Its menu, created by owner and Executive Chef Sheila Bryson, is a curated selection of shareables, salads, soups and mains, with vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options available.

Some musts to try to include the pork chop and bacon jam with two grilled bone chops, sweet potato pie, corn and zucchini and the gluten-free pescado frito, handcrafted with cowboy pinto beans, guacamole, southwest rice, escabeche (spicy pickled vegetables) and salsa served with warm corn tortillas. The pescado, a crispy, whole fish, is large and perfect for sharing. Be sure to save room for dessert and try the Rumchata tres leches, with a white cake that has been soaked in Rumchata and complemented with cinnamon-infused whipped cream.

ALMA’s cocktail menu, created by beverage director Danielle Toulouse, continues the Southwest theme with each sip. The lineup includes signature drinks and mezcal- and tequila-based cocktails. A few local fan favorites include the Spicy Chingona, handcrafted with Sonoran Rose Prickly Pear Vodka, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, prickly pear simple syrup, lime juice and muddled jalapeño and the El Burro Borracho, made with Burrito Mezcal, kiwi simple syrup, fresh lime juice and topped with ginger beer. In addition to its cocktail menu, the spot offers a selection of fine wines and beers.
