Restaurant of the Week: Feringhee Modern Indian Cuisine

Boasting beautifully innovative dishes and vibrant cocktails, Feringhee Modern Indian Cuisine brings a reimagined Indian dining experience to Chandler. Headed by two all-star culinary talents–Sujan Sarkar and Karan Mittal–the restaurant offers guests an unforgettable tasting tour through various landscapes of India, spotlighting local ingredients.

Before the food even makes it to the table at Feringhee (Feringhee translates to “foreigner”), guests enjoy a feast for the eyes by simply looking around. The dining area is saturated in hues of gold and teal, industrial-inspired light fixtures, tufted booths and a beautiful back-lit bar that runs nearly the width of the restaurant. The space is comfortable, yet a bit glamourous–making it a perfect setting for date nights or family dinners.

Feringhee’s vibrancy intensifies upon digging into the glorious dishes from co-founder Chef Sujan Sarkar and Head Chef Karan Mittal. The Chandler dining destination marks Chef Sarkar’s first foray in Arizona; the Times of India “Chef of the Year” first earned acclaim with ROOH in San Francisco and has since opened several additional locations. Food & Wine “Rising Star of the Year” Chef Mittal has worked in some of the planet’s most respected kitchens, like COI in San Francisco and Portland and Le Gavroche in London.

Puchka, right.

Among Feringhee’s most delicious sharing plates is the trio of Puchka. The vegetarian offering is a common Indian street food featuring round, hollow puri, filled with a variety of ingredients. Feringhee’s Puchka is paired with three types of liquids–Mint Jaljeera, Blackberry Kala Khatta and pineapple and passionfruit juice–for a delicious and interactive start to the meal. Another great way to wake up the taste buds? The 5 Spice Affair cocktail, with rum, passionfruit, lime, a spice blend, ginger and mint.

Follow it with a sampling of the restaurant’s small plates–they are petite in size but big on bold, rich flavor. Favorites include the Coastal Scallops and the Edamame & Avocado Bhel, with puffed grains, green apple and aged tamarind preserve. (The latter’s presentation will be your social media moment, for sure.)

Feringhee’s large plates section is brimming with hit after delicious hit, with our personal favorites being the Kashmiri Lamb Shank and Seasonal Squash & Vegetable Kofta, a meatball-esque dish with spinach saag, red amaranth and squash blossom. (Pair these dishes with saffron rice and garlic naan, two of the restaurant’s star sides.)

Seasonal Squash & Vegetable Kofta

Do not–under any circumstance–skip out before dessert, especially if you’re a coconut lover. The divine tender coconut panna cotta (which is actually served in a bowl and saucer made of coconut shell!) is paired with tangy passionfruit sorbet and somehow walks the line between refreshing and richly decadent.

Feringhee is open Tuesday to Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 5 to 11 p.m.; Sunday, 5 to 10 p.m.; and closed on Monday. To learn more about Feringhee Modern Indian Cuisine, visit www.feringhee.com.
