Tempe’s dining scene just got a major upgrade with the arrival of Filthy Animal, a vibrant new restaurant from the creative minds at Pretty Decent Concepts. Known for its imaginative and lively hospitality projects like Wren & Wolf and Chico Malo, Pretty Decent Concepts continues to push the boundaries of dining experiences — and Filthy Animal might be their boldest yet.
Located on bustling Mill Avenue, Filthy Animal flips the script on traditional dining, delivering a wildly fun, flavor-forward experience that feels anything but ordinary. From the moment you step inside, it’s clear that this isn’t your typical night out. Neon signs, bold murals, a life-sized jaguar, and dark atmosphere set the tone for an evening of indulgence and excitement.

The food is as loud and unapologetic as the décor. Chef Rene Vargas has created a menu that’s both craveable and cleverly over the top. Highlights include tuna-pineapple ceviche, paired with plantain chips, and grilled oysters with gochujang butter and chihuahua queso. The statement-making 42-oz. bone-in short rib is served with a sesame chimichurri.
The creative concepts expand into the new restaurant’s drink program where craft cocktails are fun, bold, and Instagram-worthy. Have You Heard of Mezcal? is a smoky and bright blend of mezcal, amaro, pineapple, and aji amarillo. The curated beer list and creative shot options keep the good times flowing well into the night.
Tucked behind Filthy Animal, within the same space, you’ll find Drop Dead Gorgeous, a hidden speakeasy with a completely different vibe. Behind an unmarked door, the lounge trades the lively energy of the main restaurant for velvet seating, disco lighting, and a relaxed 70s-inspired atmosphere that feels stylish without being over the top. It’s cozy, low-key, and perfect for a more laidback night without having to leave the building.
The cocktails at Drop Dead Gorgeous are artfully elevated, with drinks like the Fashionably Late and Coffee No Cream balancing creativity and smooth drinking. There’s also a small menu of upscale bar snacks that mimic Filthy Animal’s menu if you’re still hungry.

Filthy Animal isn’t just a spot to grab a quick bite — it’s the kind of place where you can relax with friends, get a little loud, and just have a good time. Whether you’re meeting up with a group or looking for a unique date night, it’s quickly becoming a favorite hangout for both Tempe locals and visitors.
Reservations are available via OpenTable; however, walk-ins are encouraged for those who want to enjoy the vibrant bar scene. The restaurant’s layout includes an indoor-outdoor feel, ideal for enjoying Arizona’s warm evenings.
