Fitting the narrative as to why many successful entrepreneurs jumpstart their business ventures, Chef Robb and Ashley Hammond tapped into a missing component to dining in Downtown Phoenix upon opening First & Last. “Working in the industry, we would get off late and be craving a sandwich or a quick bite to eat on the go,” Ashley says. The couple recalls many of the fine-dining places, at the time, were too posh to offer something as basic as a sandwich; and the places that would offer something as basic as such either lacked in quality or easy accessibility.
First & Last has become a solution to the problem that the Hammonds faced years ago. The two have capitalized on what it means to offer a pleasurable experience, with an emphasis on craft and ingredients, at a quick turn-around. A lunch menu was recently introduced at First & Last. Different from its dinner menu, guests are able to order gourmet yet casual eats. Upon entering the space, diners are encouraged to place their order at the bar. However, the restaurant owners made sure to add a theatrical element to this concept by curating an aesthetic that feels as if you are ordering from a bodega or food cart. During lunch period, staff await under an “Order Here” sign and behind a register.
The space has been personally designed and curated by the Hammonds. Having developed the skills, dedication, and consistency to run a neighborhood restaurant through her experience working management at Maple & Ash and La Grande Orange Grocery and Pizzeria, Ashley was able to tap into what guests appreciate about a dining experience beyond the enjoyment of the fare. Having spent time traveling during his culinary education, and working in the industry in cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles, Chef Robb gained an appreciation for different cultural elements. Guests will find artistic installations that serve as lighting fixtures, wall and appliance decor reminiscent to the likes of a traditional Japanese flower (tsubaki), and an Arizona staple for accent foliage (banana leaf plant).
The interior of First & Last offers guests an opportunity to get away from the outside world and be transported to a homey feeling of zen and serenity. Unlike its interior design, the menu is heavily Italian inspired. You’ll find options that are traditional at the forefront but not when it comes to the ingredients and presentation of what hits your lunch table. “My goal is to make comfort food that is reminiscent of anything you want it to be,” says Chef Robb, “whether that is somewhere you traveled to or something you recall eating frequently in your childhood.” A perfect example of this would be the bacon sourdough bolognese, as it is inspired by a Hamburger Helper meal yet is elevated to highlight each ingredient. Like most of its counterparts, this dish is representative of what the Hammonds call a “happy marriage.”
Speaking of marriage, the name of the restaurant is inspired by the marriage between the two owners. “First & Last represents me and Ashley’s love story,” says Chef Robb. “She was always the first thing I thought about at the top of my day, and the last thing I think about before I go to sleep.” The significance of this sentiment has bled into the culture of First & Last, as this establishment heavily prioritizes curating complementary dishes alongside crafted libations, using intentional ingredients. Beverage Director and Bar Manager Delena Humble keeps the establishment’s “happy marriage” concept in mind when recommending wine and cocktail pairings. Some notes for pairing are the bolognese and Barbera–a Mauro Molino from Piedmont, Italy. If you’d like to delight in one of First & Last’s sandwich favorites, the Nectarine Spritz will pair well with Little Jerry. To top off your lunch visit, try the tiramisu with The Gas Pedal–a modern twist on the espresso martini, featuring cognac, espresso, amaretto, and tart cherry.
First & Last is open for lunch Wednesday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinner is served Wednesday and Thursday, from 5 to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 5 to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, from 4 to 9 p.m.
