Restaurant of the Week: J&G Steakhouse

J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician offers one of Scottsdale‘s best fine-dining experiences year round. However, it feels even more special during the winter months, with the flickering firepits, molten chocolate cake and seasonal cocktails to keep you warm.

Here’s the thing about the revered J&G Steakhouse at The Phoenician: its swanky atmosphere will make you want to don your finest threads, sip a martini and dine on chilled shellfish. However, its warm and welcoming atmosphere and staff will make you feel comfortable even if you ditch the tie and bring the kiddos along, instead. Perfect for date night or a special meal with the family, J&G Steakhouse offers a top-tier dining experience in the Valley. The only thing that can distract from its patio–full of firepits and offering one of the best views in the state–is its glamourous dimly lit interior, with plush booths and gold accents.

The menu, from Executive Chef Jacques Qualin, showcases stellar steaks–naturally–but also pays just as much attention to incredible seafood dishes, top-notch cocktails and a spectacular wine list. Appetizers, like black truffle cheese fritters, tuna tartare and crab cakes, set the bar high right out of the gate. The steakhouse’s superb side dishes are also not to be missed; from grilled asparagus perked up with lemon zest to the utterly decadent potato gratin with Comté, there is an accompaniment for every craving.

For big appetites (the 10-oz. six peppercorn prime New York steak or lamb T-bone) or even bigger appetites (the 30-oz. wagyu Tomahawk ribeye for two), there is a mouthwatering from-the-grill option for you. A selection of sauces, like smoked-chili glaze and a traditional béarnaise, complement each bite beautifully. For a front-row seat to a fascinating show, order the sauteed dover sole grenobloise as the delicate filet is deboned tableside. A winner even without the fanfare, the fish melts in your mouth, needing only the most simple of flourishes in butter and lemon.

For dessert, though the J&G cheesecake is a thing of legend, the warm chocolate cake hits just right during the chilly months, featuring melty, rich chocolate and caramel ice cream. For an even sweeter adieu, be sure to grab a few moments on the patio, taking in the sunset or starry sky.
