Restaurant of the Week: Los Sombreros Mesa

For nearly three decades, Los Sombreros has been a Valley treasure with a loyal fanbase who clamor to its Scottsdale location for authentic Mexican eats. The eatery recently added a third outpost to its lineup (Uptown Phoenix marked its second location), giving Mesa diners easier access to its delicious specialties.

Anyone who steps foot inside Los Sombreros’ new Mesa location knows what to expect: deliciousness. The restaurant has been a staple for family gatherings for 26 years with very good reason. So it was certainly no surprise that each bite of the crab enchiladas, mole poblano, selection of hearty tacos and guacamole (with a Los Sombreros-branded tortilla!) was delectable–and even beyond that, comforting.

What was slightly unexpected was just how gorgeous the restaurant would be. Located in a no-frills strip mall along Southern Ave., diners are in for a real treat upon entering the restaurant. The interior is brimming with warm woods, gorgeous leather, unique light fixtures and a jaw-dropping ceiling instillation, making it as handsome as it is welcoming. A semi-private dining room just begs to host your next small get-together, thanks to art-filled walls and candle-lit coziness.

For a brighter spot to savor–while taking in a game on the TVs or live music–is the patio. Yellow chairs and rainbow-hued wall-hangings add even more vibrancy to the patio, making you want to hang around a while to enjoy a subtly smoky Mango Mezcarita (sweet mango with dry Spanish Fino sherry, Los Vecinos mezcal and lime juice) or a refreshing Tijuana Donkey (Jose Cuervo Tradicional tequila, liquid alchemist tamarindo, lime and ginger beer).

Los Sombreros Mesa is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. toĀ 9Ā p.m. Plus, holiday tamales are now available (a dozen for $35). Pre-order online; pick-up is available until 11 a.m. on Dec. 24. Los Sombreros Mesa is holding its official grand opening Dec. 16. Guests will receive 50 percent off their entire bill all day, and house margaritas will be $3 Thursday through Sunday.Ā
