Restaurant of the Week: Lush Burger

Lush Burger, located on Pima Rd in North Scottsdale, has signature burgers and other creative fare in a casual, comfortable environment.

There are certain things to look for in a burger joint to really know it’s a step above. Lush Burger checks off every item. Fresh beef cooked perfectly to order? Check. Unique creations and toppings? Check. Cold beer on tap with some excellent choices? Check. A menu with witty descriptions and one-liners throughout? Ok, that isn’t really a mandatory aspect, but it definitely didn’t hurt the experience. Someone at Lush has a sharp sense of humor. And that someone is Jay, the owner of Lush, who has been in the restaurant business over 22 years. He designed and built 2 restaurants from scratch in Rhode Island before moving to Scottsdale to buy Lush Burger with his wife Michelle.

With the name Lush Burger, you expect excellent burgers – and we’ll discuss them shortly – but there is a wide range of other options as well. Let’s start with the flatbreads. Specifically, “The Breakfast One” as Lush calls it, because why not start with breakfast and the breakfast flatbread at Lush is available all day. A generous layer of Wisconsin cheddar jack cheese, bacon, sausage and pieces of scrambled egg make up the toppings before being finished with two over easy eggs that create a dipping sauce for each bite. The crust is unique because it is finished on the grill. This results in a warm, soft, doughy base that is unlike most pizza or flatbread crusts. Some other flatbread options are the Veggie, the Meat-a-saurus and “The Cheeseburger One”.

The signature burgers steal the show at Lush Burger. If you “like the standards” as written in the description, you can go with the “Hello…?!?! Can Anyone Get Me a Bacon Cheeseburger Around Here” or build your own burger. If you’re feeling adventurous – and I recommend you go to Lush Burger feeling adventurous, go with the Havana Burger. An ode to the famous Cuban Sandwich, you get a half-pound of Angus beef and all the toppings that make the Cuban Miami’s favorite sandwich. Best of all, Lush stays true to the original by serving it on pressed french bread. Another creative option is Patrick Swayze’s favorite – the Roadhouse Burger. An underrated cheese option for burgers is gruyere and there is plenty of it on this eight ounce monster. It is also topped with bacon, multiple styles of onions and a garlic aioli inside an onion bun.
