Restaurant of the Week: Spotted Donkey Cantina

Spotted Donkey Cantina at el Pedregal is nestled in the Sonoran Foothills at The Boulders Resort & Spa in North Scottsdale. This original yet casual Mexican eatery serves up entrees like tacos and fajitas, soups, salads and an impressive tequila lineup to sip alongside its specialty dishes.

The authentic restaurant space features traditional décor statements like terracotta floors, dark wood accents, tin star pendant lights, donkey murals and a sizable open-air patio with scenic desert landscape. It is not by chance the restaurant has a casual donkey theme as the trendy concept originated with one of the co-owners growing up in Utah with a spotted donkey–they do exist!

With Executive Chef Drew Wetmore at the helm (a talented new addition overseeing the kitchens at The Boulders’ restaurants), Mexican cuisine lovers and those simply out to enjoy patio season will find comfort at Spotted Donkey Cantina at el Pedregal. Menu options include chicken posole, Mexican shrimp ceviche served in a lime aguachile sauce, comforting hatch chile pork stew, Mexico City carne asada sided with chile-potato cakes, poblano chile relleno and much more.

Cocktail lovers will appreciate Spotted Donkey’s assortment of specialty tequilas, wines and beers. Whether you are looking for full-bodied and fragrant flavors or smooth and distinct, there is a cocktail for everyone. Signature cocktails like the El Pedregal offer a boozy mix with hand-selected, limited-production reposado tequila (Herradura Double Barrel reposado rested in oak barrels for 11 months), capturing a smoothness that makes this cocktail a guest favorite.

Spotted Donkey Cantina serves dinner Sunday through Thursday, 4 to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 4 to 10 p.m.; and happy hour, 3 to 6 p.m., daily.
