Restaurant of the Week: Taco Chelo

Taco Chelo is an authentic taqueria on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix, serving up a concise menu of tacos, vegetables and beverages.

A collaboration between Suny Santana, Gennaro Garcia, and Aaron Chamberlin, Taco Chelo is named for chef Suny’s mother Consuelo, nicknamed “Chelo,” who has a huge influence on chef Suny’s cooking style.

Internationally recognized artist Gennaro Garcia is a native of Sonora, Mexico, where he grew up in the kitchens of his family restaurants and where his passion for art started at a young age. Taco Chelo is rich with art, making a meal there more than just food.

The menu is not extensive, making every dish truly excellent. The tacos are of course a must, served on handmade corn tortillas and classic options such as Carnitas, Beef Barbacoa, and Carne Asada.

Brunch is served every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 3pm. There are only 5 items on the brunch menu and we honestly recommend trying them all! Chilaquiles, Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast Taco, Breakfast Burrito and Breakfast Torta is the complete brunch menu and you really can’t go wrong with any of these.

For drinks, we recommend the House Margarita, that comes in three flavors – strawberry, mango, and passion fruit. One of the three tequila flights is a great option as well.

Taco Chelo is open Sunday – Thursday, 11am to 10pm and Friday – Saturday, 11am to 12am.
