Restaurant of the Week: Toca Madera

The popular high energy, fine dining restaurant Toca Madera has opened in Old Town Scottsdale, serving up modern organic Mexican food and craft cocktails.

The Scottsdale Taco Madera location impresses the moment you walk in, with a 8,000-square-foot space through a lush courtyard that flows from the dining area to the lounge. Unlike the West Hollywood location, Toca Madera Scottsdale has an open floor plan with views into the kitchen and a ceviche bar.

Start your evening with one of their craft cocktails, choosing a drink from their “farm-to-glass” bar program that uses fresh, seasonal ingredients and features a wide variety of fine tequilas and mezcals. The cocktails are as visually appealing as they are to the tastebuds, with some even getting lit on fire for the finishing touch. A fan favorite that is as cute as it sounds is the Winnie de Pooh, made with Casamigos blanco infused with chamomile, green chartreuse, ginger, lemon, mint and wild flower honey.

The kitchen will be led by Executive Chef Joseph Castillo, a native of Southern California whose culinary experience includes the Patina Restaurant Group and Sushi Roku at the W Scottsdale. The menu is composed of Mexican cuisine with a strong focus on pairing bold flavors with high quality sustainable and organic ingredients. Something we were very pleased to see is this fine dining menu also offers plenty of vegan and gluten-free options.

Begin your dinner with one of their starters, including Guacamole made with organic avocados, Empanadas Oaxaca and Calamari Frito made with wild-caught calamari. There is a wide selection to choose from the Raw Bar, including a popular Ceviche Trio and Habanero Oyster Shots.

Choose from a selection of Tacos served on house-made blue corn tortillas. Protein options include Kobe Al Pastor, Chicken Mixiote, Tiger Shrimp, Sea Bass Ensenada, Carne Asada and Cilantro Chicken. You can also order the Street Taco Box that includes 5 handmade blue corn tortillas w/ black beans, salsa, lime, cilantro onion with choice of pollo vegano, organic free-range chicken or organic beef barbacoa.

One of our favorites on the menu are the Rocks – your choice of protein served over hot lava stones, perfect for sharing with the table. You can choose from free-range chicken, tiger shrimp, grass-fed carne asada – or from the specialty list, the American Wagyu or Japanese Wagyu.

There are several entrees to choose from as well, including their Signature Mole that uses a unique blend of nearly 30 ingredients that are simmered & smoked for over 24-hours. A recipe that has been in their chef’s family for generations.

Toca Madera will serve dinner from 5pm to 2am Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and from 5pm to 1am Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. The restaurant will be closed on Mondays through the end of the year and will be closed Sundays until November 10. Beginning November 9, brunch will be offered from 10am to 3pm Saturdays and Sundays. Happy hour, with a limited menu and discounts on food and drink, is 4pm to 7pm daily, with extended offerings on Tuesday until 8pm for Taco Tuesdays.
