Can rustic mountain fare be gourmet and romantic? In the case of Shift, yes! Tucked into one of Downtown Flagstaff’s refurbished historic buildings, Shift’s mission is to shift everything you think about Flagstaff’s food scene. However, it might also shift your definition of romance. Certainly, grand palaces and epic patios are special, not to mention rich steakhouses and delicate tasting menus. But there is something to be said for this open-kitchen airy concept and its approach to making couples feel special, one table at a time. The menu always has some “what are these all about” on it that inspires conversation, meaning a dish or two with ingredients married together – lavender butter and olives, for example, or bone marrow with black currant jam and whipped horseradish – that turn the evening into a culinary adventure. The cooler weather, and the resulting need to cuddle up when arriving or leaving, helps set the mood as well.
