Tesota Opens in Uptown Phoenix

Tesota, from famed Phoenix chef/restaurateur Doug Robson, has opened its doors in Uptown Phoenix. The new Latin-centric restaurant has taken over the space formerly occupied by Southern Rail.

Doug Robson, of Gallo Blanco and Otro Café in Phoenix, expands on his Latin-centric menus (for lunch, dinner and happy hour) with ingredient-focused dishes, ranging from steak and seafood, to Mediterranean, Asian and South American fare, at Tesota, which is the Spanish word for “desert ironwood tree.” “Having previously focused on Mexican and Latin fare, I was excited to expand our boundaries, literally,” says Chef Robson, in a press release. “Tesota is as much a neighborhood restaurant as it is a destination restaurant, with a chef-driven, seasonal menu with lots of fun ingredients that explore different culinary traditions across borders.”


Joining Robson is Executive Chef James Porter; the pair have worked together off and on since 2000. Robson and Portern’s menu utilizes existing pizza oven to make fold-over sandwiches, starting with fresh-baked pizza dough that’s split apart and stuffed with fresh ingredients. The seasonal menu also includes seafood and crudo in addition to Pizzettas, or individual pizzas, including chorizo, asparagus, margarita and Iberian salumi. As a nod to Beefeater’s Steakhouse (which, prior to Southern Rail, was located in Tesota’s new home), the restaurant delights with an ever-changing menu of craft cocktails and beers, plus a premium wine list, highlighted by an extensive selection of Arizona wines.

Tesota’s interior design is built around color, warmth and vibrant greenery, acting as an extension of what diners might expect in Mexico City. Guests are invited to linger at the bar, unwind on the spacious year-round patio or even grab a spot on the preserved Beefeater’s tufted black-leather booth seating.


Tesota is open Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Uptown Phoenix restaurant offers a daily happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m., featuring a full menu of handcrafted cocktails and specially priced drinks and bar bites. Tesota will offer weekend brunch later this summer.
