Nonprofit of the Month: 100 Black Men of Phoenix

A beacon of leadership, 100 Black Men of Phoenix provides programs to enhance educational and economic opportunities for all people of color, serving more than 100 youth per month since 1994. Prentice Moore, chapter president, discusses the nonprofit’s upcoming fundraisers and the biggest reward in being involved in the mentoring organization.

What prompted the start of the nonprofit? In 1994, 100 Black Men of Phoenix became incorporated as a nonprofit organization as a result of a decision of its leadership Board of Directors and the general membership to stand out in our community as a credible, trustworthy and honorable mentoring organization.

What is the mission of 100 Black Men of Phoenix? The mission of 100 Black Men of Phoenix, Inc. is to improve the quality of life within our communities and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all people of color.

What is the greatest reward in being involved with the nonprofit? The greatest reward is to see and hear community leaders and business owners share with us how the work of 100 Black Men of Phoenix has impacted young men and women, along with the parents, in the underprivileged communities that we serve. Those philanthropists knew at those times that our work and successes are now their work and successes. We now work in lock step to help in a great cause.

What is the biggest challenge the nonprofit faces? Has the pandemic affected the needs of 100 Black Men of Phoenix? Our greatest challenge that we face is the ability to reach more of our target market, which are the young men and women in “at-risk” environments. This is mainly because of the vastness of the issues in low-income, single, no-parent or grandparent households. Many homes in these communities do not have transportation. Therefore, can’t attend our programs. We need space to operate in, computers, audio visual aids and equipment to accommodate learning and development for the youngsters. The pandemic was devastating for us. We maintained some video contact through Zoom sessions, but some of our youth did not have devices to get on the Zooms.

What are your goals for the new year? Among the most critical 2023 goals for 100 Black Men of Phoenix is to get fully on track with in-person fundraising efforts. As with most nonprofit organizations, fundraising was negatively impacted by COVID-19. However, we are excited about the events that are planned.

How can readers get involved? We’re always looking members, volunteers and supporters to continue the impactful mentoring and work of 100 Black Men of Phoenix. We will host at least four new member mixers and are actively seeking collaborations with community partners to secure locations.

Does 100 Black Men of Phoenix have any events or fundraisers on the horizon? YES. We are looking forward to the return of our annual jazz fundraiser, which will occur on April 29 at the beautiful Desert Botanical Garden. Also, in the Fall, we will have our annual golf tournament at the Legacy Golf Resort. Information on both can be found on our website at 100blackmenofphoenix.com.
