One-n-ten, a Phoenix-based nonprofit that offers resources and support for Arizona’s LGBTQ+ audience, will host its second-annual National Coming Out Day gathering and fundraiser from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Heard Museum in Phoenix.

Each year National Coming Out Day offers a chance for the LGBTQ+ community to share their stories in an effort to raise awareness and offer support for those who may be struggling or feel unable to embrace the fullness of their identities.

Recent political attacks on the LGBTQ+ community only affirm the importance of this annual event dedicated to encouraging individuals to take the critical step in coming out, and one local organization provides a safe, supportive place for them to do so.

The event gives local LGBTQ+ individuals a platform through which to reclaim their voices and live freely as themselves. It also serves double-duty as a fundraiser for one-n-ten, which helps this population navigate the coming out process and other important life events, from supportive housing solutions to workforce development. The center has also introduced a parent-group program, for parents and adults to share their experiences and educate themselves on how to support their youth effectively.

This last year has been especially hard for LGBTQ+ youth who have had to see laws across the country being passed that can negatively impact their human right to be who they are.

Over 60% of LGBTQ+ youth disclosed wanting mental health care but did not get it citing the top reasons as fear of discussing mental health concerns, fear of obtaining parent/caregiver permission, and fear of not being taken seriously.

In addition to giving guest speakers a chance to come out or otherwise share their stories in front of a crowd, one-n-ten’s National Coming Out Day fundraiser also includes a reception with cocktails and appetizers and a video component. Oct. 12.

Proceeds from ticket sales will help pave the way for one-n-ten to broaden its footprint and expand its reach statewide. Currently, one-n-ten has its main headquarters in Downtown Phoenix and numerous satellite locations throughout the state. In addition to helping fund housing, education, employment and support services for LGBTQ youth, the event will also help finance annual one-n-ten events and initiatives such as its Camp OUTdoors program, a summer camp program that teaches youth leadership, community and similar skill sets in a traditional summer camp setting.

Rounding out the week, one-n-ten will also be this year’s grand marshall at the Phoenix Pride Parade taking place on Sunday, October 16, and invites those to sign up and walk with them at this years event.
