Each week we will be highlighting one of the fabulous emerging designers from Phoenix Fashion Week 2017. This week, meet fashion designer Kelley West, the founder and designer of Tagliente, statement jewelry as versatile as the woman who wears it.
Hometown: Peoria, IL
First fashion job: My first job in fashion was as the owner/designer of Rhinestones & Relics. I was a self-taught jewelry designer with no previous design/fashion background.
When did you know you had a passion for fashion: It wasn’t until a few years ago when I started making jewelry that I developed an appreciation for all aspects of fashion.
Person who has impacted your life the most: I guess I would say my mom. She is by far the most hardworking woman I know. She instilled a strong work ethic in all three of us girls.
Your biggest fashion accomplishment in your eyes: I would have to say just starting and my own brand in general. I have zero fashion, sales or marketing background. I’ve never even worked in a retail setting. I just really love being creative and making jewelry! I’m proud of myself for realizing my dream, setting goals, and going after it.
The biggest obstacle you have overcome: Without a doubt – having more confidence in myself.
A designer who inspires you: This may sound strange, but I don’t really have one. I just know what I like to make, and that’s what I do.
Favorite quote: “A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.” This is something I am trying to put into practice in my everyday life. I am a huge people pleaser and never tell people “no.” So I turn my life upside down trying to do everything for everyone because they are unorganized or procrastinate. I’m working on it!
Advice to someone pursuing a career in fashion as a designer: You need to have thick skin.
Favorite piece you have ever designed:
