Uchi Scottsdale to Open Feb. 1

Hai Hospitality is gearing up to open its highly-anticipated Uchi Scottsdale in the heart of Old Town on Feb. 1. Uchi marks the Austin-based restaurant group’s first Arizona concept.

Uchi Scottsdale promises impeccable service and an elevated, non-traditional take on Japanese cuisine. James Beard Award-winning Chef Tyson Cole’s innovative style features an array of hot and cool tastings, sushi and sashimi, makimono, yakimono, tempura and an ever-changing omakase (or chef’s choice menu) based on seasonal items. The soon-to-open restaurant joins successful sister locations in Austin (which opened in 2003), Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami and Los Angeles.

“As a fellow chef here in the Southwest, I’ve always appreciated the vibrant culinary scene in Scottsdale, and the growth over the past few years has truly been incredible,” says Executive Chef Cole, in a press release. “We spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect spot to bring Uchi to Scottsdale, and I know our entire team is so excited to finally reveal the results of all of our planning and hard work over the past year plus of getting ready. Most of all, I’d like to thank all the local chefs and the restaurant community here, who have been so supportive and welcoming us to Arizona.”

Though diners can savor Uchi fan favorites, the Scottsdale outpost will be home to a variety of site-specific dishes, including lamb sirloin with roast kabocha puree, cranberry-ginger relish and spicy pickled kabocha; masu crudo with ocean trout, Japanese sweet potato and makrut lime leaf; and the decadent wagyu carpaccio (also available at the original Uchi in Austin).

The space–offering an intersection of Arizona and Japanese design sensibilities–was designed by Hai Design Studio in collaboration with design architect, Tucson’s Hazelbaker Rush, and architect of record, Phoenix-based AV3 Design Studio. Uchi Scottsdale seats 207 total guests, which includes bar seating and an outdoor patio.

Can’t wait until Feb. 1? Uchi Scottsdale is donating a portion of proceeds during its soft opening–Jan. 25 to Jan. 30–to local charities, including HonorHealth, The Joy Bus, Phoenix Rescue Mission and St. Mary’s Food Bank.
