Sustainable Lifestyle: Diet or Lifestyle

She is sharing her knowledge with us in this weekly column and this week we are talking about the difference between a Diet and Lifestyle choice.

Definition of diet: “restrict oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food in order to lose weight”

So when we think of a “diet” in this sense of the word, it seems to be about deprivation and lack. A means to an end without thinking of much else. Even the thought of a “diet” shifts your own energy to less, lack and doing without. That alone can wreck havoc on your overall positive outlook.

I want to invite you to think of choosing a healthy lifestyle. One that can be sustained over the course of your life. One that enriches you on every level as well as the world around you and those you are doing life with. An abundant mindset. Gaining a sense of well being, overall elevated wellness and feeling of doing good for yourself, animals and the environment.

This kind of a choice is one that requires thought. It requires you to look at things other than your scale. To shift your mind set from what you perceive you CAN’T have to opening your mind to all the new things you CAN experience.

Ask yourself, what are your areas of focus. Obviously you are reviewing your body weight and body mass. However, choosing a healthy life style goes deeper than our outward appearance.

What is your energy level like?
Are you clear headed or foggy?
Level of well being?
Food likes and dislikes?
Any moral or ethical issues?
Health determining ratios i.e.: cholesterol levels, triglycerides, thyroid, hormones and blood
pressure etc.
Health of your skin
Current medications
Personal life goals

All of these should be taken into consideration when deciding on which to chose. A diet may get you a few pounds off quickly but at what cost? Isn’t the idea to live a healthy life at a desired weight and something that is very livable no matter your situation?
